To get to know people in our church, coming to church on Sunday and visiting during “coffee hour” is a great start. However, if you are interested in getting to know others on a deeper level, there are plenty of opportunities! We welcome and encourage you to attend all events that interest you. To find the specific date and time of an event, consult the calendar.
Monthly Events
Chalice Circles: This is a wonderful experience and is the best way to get to know others on a deeper level. Chalice Circles offer another opportunity to worship, but in a small group of around six to eight participants. The Circles are co-led by two members of the congregation. Participants gather generally twice per month and with the same participants for approximately four months. All gatherings include chalice lighting, singing and readings. These groups create an open, supportive, nurturing environment that promotes and facilitates spiritual growth and mutual, interactive care for one another.
Saturday Suppers: Potluck dinners are held on the first Saturday of each month. Participants are organized to attend at one of the several homes hosting suppers that month. These suppers offer a way for groups of six to ten congregants to get to know each other in a relaxed setting, and are especially useful for new friends who want to make connections, but might feel overwhelmed in the company of the whole congregation.Women's Group: Meeting each month at various homes, this group promotes friendship and boosts spirituality for women. Gatherings are advertised to involve eating, laughing, and sharing with UUCC women.
Men's Group: This informal gathering of men occurs monthly, sometimes at the church for a hearty breakfast! While generally without any agenda except for eating and drinking, it is the place where meaningful discussion occurs and occasional organization of masculine group-efforts, such as the Men's Group offering of handyman services to the Action Auction.
Daring Diners: Each month, the Daring Diners coordinator selects a restaurant and date for dinner, announcing it in the newsletter. Interested members and friends gather for a meal, usually at an ethnic restaurant. The wide variety of ethnic groups in the Sacramento area and the range of cuisines they offer, allow the Diners to experience diverse and excellent cooking.
Theatre Group: Do you enjoy the theatre? The Theatre Group selects and attends a play each month.
Daytimers Group: An adult discussion group a.k.a. “Daytimers” meets Thursdays from 10am to 12pm at the church. Expect a free and open discussion, lively talk, good company, and lunch at a local restaurant afterwards.
Annual Events
Intermittent Choir: Cantamus Sporadicus, our ad hoc choir, performs for the congregation several times each year. The singers meet for rehearsals, and then enjoy sharing the gift of music with their fellow churchgoers.
Annual Camping Trip: A huge portion of our congregation joins in on the annual camping trip. This wonderful time in the mountains gives us the opportunity to get to know each other better in a natural, informal setting. The camping trip generally takes place every August.
Action Auction: This is our largest fundraiser of the year, but it's also loads of fun! The auction includes dinner, raffles and both silent and regular auctions. The evening highlights include wonderful food, excellent desserts and a chance to bid on goods and services. Children have their own activities and a child-friendly auction for them to bid on appropriate items. This is a popular Fall event, as participants have a chance to mingle and get a jump on holiday shopping!
Garage Sale: Spring is generally the time for the UUCC garage sale. This is a wonderful opportunity to clean out your house and donate items to the sale. It's also a great time to roll up the sleeves and work side-by-side with your fellow parishioners.
Pool Parties: Every summer a congregant or two opens their home for a cool, refreshing pool party. This gives us an opportunity to enjoy each others company in a relaxed setting, in addition to having a break from our summer heat.
